How CliniQuill Is Helping Aakom Kiyii Health Services Bring More Care to the Piikani Nation

Homecare nursing on reserve comes with a set of challenges that don’t show up in a typical clinical setting: long distances, rough terrain, unpredictable weather, and a shortage of nearby health services. For the nurses at Aakom Kiyii Health Services, who serve the Piikani Nation’s 3,500-plus members, those obstacles eat directly into the time they can spend with clients. Charting on paper or catching up on notes back at the office only made the gap worse.

That’s the problem CliniQuill, an ambient AI scribe, was built to solve — and Aakom Kiyii’s homecare team has been living the results.

The Challenge

Aakom Kiyii’s homecare program currently serves between 200 and 300 clients, offering services that range from wound care and personal care to help navigating placement, appointments, and transportation. Every one of those visits happens against a backdrop of real logistical friction.

“Some challenges that we face on reserve include rough terrain, bad weather, bad roads, lack of health services on reserve,” one of the program’s nurses explained, “and those are all challenges and they impact us directly in regards to time management, being able to effectively reach the community members.”

In other words, the hours nurses spend driving, dealing with weather, or writing up charts after the fact are hours not spent with clients — a trade-off that’s especially costly in a community already stretched thin on nearby services.

The Solution

CliniQuill lets nurses chart on the go, directly from their phone, during or right after a visit. The conversation is captured and summarized automatically, and the data syncs back to the office without any extra data entry.

The impact showed up almost immediately. About three days into using the app, one nurse went into a client’s home expecting a routine set of vitals. Instead, a family member was there with a long list of questions, and what was supposed to be a quick check-in turned into a 45-minute conversation covering a lot of ground.

“There was a lot of information taken in that visit but [CliniQuill] perfectly summarized it into one chart entry,” she said. “That was my first ‘aha’ moment with it. It was like, wow, look, I would have forgot probably at least three of these things.”

Overcoming the Skepticism

Not everyone was sold right away. One nurse on the team admitted her first reaction to hearing about an AI charting tool was “a hard no.” That changed after a hands-on training session with CliniQuill’s team.

“When Sal was going to come out and give some instruction on that, I thought, ‘Oh, well heck, I’ll listen to it,'” she said. “He just does one-to-one and he gets you set up and he’s very patient, and it went well. So I thought, ‘Hey, I guess I’m not too old. Old dogs can learn new tricks, you know?'”

Two weeks later, that same nurse said she felt like a pro — and had started showing off her charting to colleagues.

The Results

For Aakom Kiyii’s homecare team, CliniQuill has turned charting from a task that competed with client time into one that runs alongside it. Visits get documented completely and accurately, even when they run long or take an unexpected turn, and nurses head back to the office with the paperwork already done.

As one nurse summed it up: “I think it is very user friendly, and I think nobody should be afraid of AI when it comes to CliniQuill.”

For a program covering rough terrain and long distances to reach community members, that time back is time redirected to more visits, more clients, and more of the personal, on-the-ground care that homecare nursing is all about.
